First Tropical Storm of Year Heads for North Mexico, Severe Weather in Cancun

Unsettled weather continues to hit the Riviera Maya, and now a tropical storm could be headed to the north end of Mexico.

Weather experts say Tropical Storm Alberto could slam into northeast Mexico or perhaps southern Texas in the coming days. It would be the first named storm of what some expect to be a severe hurricane season in the Caribbean.

The Weather Network is calling for severe thunderstorms in Cancun on 19JUN, with more storms and up to 75 mm of rain on 20JUN. Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras also are experiencing heavy rains.

CNN reports that double-digit rainfall totals are likely in portions of coastal and southern Texas by the weekend, while other portions of the Gulf Coast could pick up several inches through midweek.

Further south, swimmers in Tulum on 18JUN captured photos of spinning waterspouts and unusual cloud formations.

The southern part of Quintana Roo was placed under a state of emergency on 14JUN after a severe storm lashed the region.
