Normally the hot ticket in Toronto is a theatre show. Not so on Wed 31JUL when a stellar troupe of travel industry veterans and friends showed up to bid farewell to retiring TTAND VP of Travel Agent Services, Penny Martin.
The event, held at the downtown Sheraton Hotel, was pitched to Penny by her husband, travel industry photographer Dan Galbraith, as an “Air Canada event” to ensure she didn’t know about the surprise party. To lend credibility, there were AC staffers outside the entrance.
And when she walked it, the 70-some guests cheered her arrival, launching an evening of friendship, reconnections and accolades.
“She’s one of a kind,” commented Transat’s Nicole Bursey. Echoed by Direct Travel’s Meredith Burbidge, “Fantastic as a mentor, during my Sears days – I still use what I learned from her.” And a smiling Kim Clarke told Open Jaw, “There’s no one like Penny. I adore her and wish her nothing but the best.”
Dianne Jackson, with TDC, remembered “my days with Penny at CAA on Carlton Street. We sure got up to some shenanigans – sometimes involving inside-out clothes. That’s all I’ll say!”
There were video tributes from TTAND colleagues who were unable to attend – including the team in India who told Penny that “We will miss you - we love you and your legacy of excellence.”
The crowd was a diverse mix of TTAND colleagues, fellow retailers, suppliers, tourist boards and industry retirees. Squeals of recognition were joined by hearty handshakes and warm hugs – making for a wonderful evening.
In a warm speech, Penny’s “work husband” aka TTAND President and Founder Flemming, paid tribute to the guest of honour, saying that the team will miss her immensely.
“To see all of you – my heart is bursting,” said Penny. “Flemming and I have had a good time, and I am so thankful. He has been amazing!”
Thanks to talented real life husband Dan, there were videos and stills recalling her days with the group, including her signature look in vintage clothing (right side out).
Good luck, Penny. You are clearly loved by many, and leave a legacy sure to inspire TTAND in future.
