The COVID-19 pandemic will transform the way people travel internationally, as the government plans spending on modernized border security and updating public health measures. In the recent federal budget update, the government announced CAD $82.5m to fund COVID-19 testing infrastructure at Canadian airports and another CAD $6.7m to buy sanitization equipment for the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority. Ottawa also has marked CAD $656.1m over five years to modernize Canada's border security. On 22FEB 2021, the federal government implemented new quarantine measures at airports requiring that all air travellers returning from non-essential trips abroad take PCR tests 72 hours before they fly, and a second afterwards while they quarantine for another 72 hours to await results. One expert said that while the funding for testing infrastructure at airports is welcome, testing cannot continue to take place in airports once pre-COVID levels of air travel return, and suggested take-home tests or an off-site testing centre close to the airport as alternatives. “Touchless” travel is also set to rise and the federal government will be trialing the "Known Traveller Digital Identity" (KTDI) project to reduce the amount of times physical passports need to be taken out and used.
