Firefly tourism is a newer trend in Mexico where visitors come to isolated locations to see forests lit up at night, primarily at Nanacamilpa, Tlaxcala, at the Santuario de las Luciérnagas (Firefly Sanctuary). Firefly season at Tlaxcala attracts thousands of tourists each year, and the state puts restrictions in place to reduce this impact. Only certain tour operators are allowed to work in this sector, and tourism professionals say that it is becoming increasingly difficult to book a reservation. However, talks are in the works to add firefly tourism to existing Mexican ecotourism efforts. The Ejido Santa Rita Tlahuapan in Puebla started its own firefly sanctuary open to the public, announcing many of the same measures that are in place in Tlaxcala.
