The Public Service Alliance of Canada and its Customs and Immigration Union, which represents around 9,000 Canadian Border Service Agency workers, says its members have voted in favour of striking, which may jeopardize the federal government’s plan to reopen to fully vaccinated U.S. travellers. The workers may go on strike as soon as 06AUG 2021, just three days before the border is set to open. Union members began holding strike votes in JUN 2021, as they had been without a contract for nearly three years. Workers also cited better protections for staff and addressing “toxic” workplace culture as some reasons for the strike vote.
