Off the coast of Dubai, Kleindienst Group, the developer behind the Heart of Europe mega-resort, part of Dubai’s famous man-made islands, is planning on developing a 500,000 square meter coral reef. The Group plans to create a coral institute by the islands to nurse and regenerate corals using a technique known as "fragmentation," where corals can potentially regenerate hundreds of times after being cut using a saw. The corals will then be stored in tanks and nursed by marine biologists until they grow enough to recreate a reef. "The Coral Institute will hold and protect the genetic stock of corals ... around the Arabian Gulf," Josef Kleindienst, the chairman of Kleindienst Group, tells CNN. A study from 2018 found that 73 per cent of the corals in the UAE have been wiped out by bleaching, climate change, and human activity.
