While Canada has reopened its borders to fully vaccinated Americans as of 09AUG, there are fears that the expected tourism boost can be threatened by the COVID-19 Delta variant and shortages in the labour industry. RBC economists note that while the opened border will be a boost, there are concerns that the Delta variant could stall progress. “Still, with over 80 per cent of eligible Canadians at least partially vaccinated, another round of domestic lockdowns looks less likely — and much of the travel/tourism recovery to date has been driven by domestic tourists,” the economists noted. In terms of labour shortages, Statistics Canada notes that while there has been a recent job boost to the accommodation and food services sectors, it is still below pre-pandemic levels. Bloomberg also notes that listings in the food services sector are up 72 per cent from pre-pandemic levels, suggesting strong demand for bartenders, kitchen help and servers.
