New Zealand plans to reopen its borders to fully vaccinated travellers from low risk countries without the need for quarantine in early 2022, as part of its phased reopening plan. Prime minister Jacinda Ardern stated that the government will adopt a new, individual risk-based approach for quarantine-free travel from the first quarter of 2022. While fully vaccinated travellers coming from low-risk countries can enter the country quarantine-free, those coming from medium risk countries must self-isolate or stay for a short while at a designated quarantine hotel. On the other hand, those coming from high-risk countries must stay for a full 14 days at a quarantine hotel upon arrival. The New Zealand government has yet to clarify which countries are low-risk or medium risk. The country does have a high-risk list, which includes Brazil, Fiji India, Indonesia, Pakistan, and Papua New Guinea. Canada is not currently on New Zealand’s high-risk list.
