Why Phuket's 'Sandbox' Pilot Project Matters to Other Islands in Asia

According to the UN's International Labour Organization, the tourism industry employs at least 15.3 million workers across the Asia-Pacific, which is why Thailand’s Phuket “Sandbox” pilot project is catching attention from other nations in the region who also rely on tourism. Within the project, travellers must spend at least 14 days in an approved quarantine hotel before being able to travel to the rest of the country, but within that timeframe they are also allowed to roam the island freely. As of 01AUG, Phuket has welcomed 14,910 international arrivals, and experts predict a slow and steady growth of arrivals to monitor the spread. Other Thai destinations have opened similar ‘sandboxes’, with more on the horizon. Depending on its success, other Asian destinations, including Bali and Singapore, may look into similar solutions.
