White House not Budging as Lobbyists, Lawmakers and Mayors Plead to Reopen Border

Lobbyists, lawmakers and border mayors are pleading with the Biden government to ease restrictions on non-essential travel as other countries are opening to Americans. Restrictions on cross-border travel have been renewed monthly, with the new deadline approaching on 21AUG. However, the White House has indicated that a re-opening may not happen anytime soon due to the rise of Delta variant cases. White House COVID-19 coordinator Jeff Zients said agency working groups are looking into how to reopen the border safely, and U.S. officials have met with representatives from Canada, the European Union, United Kingdom and Mexico to discuss reopening. "We've been frozen in time with restrictions for 18 months that have almost nothing to do with what's happening on the ground in these countries," Stewart Verdery, a lobbyist working on the issue. JetBlue CEO said that he is “frustrated” with the U.S. COVID-19 travel restrictions.
