Caribbean Returns to Lockdowns as COVID-19 Spikes Amid Low Vaccination Rates

Many nations in the Caribbean have returned to lockdowns due to COVID-19 spikes and low vaccination rates, despite positive signs of tourism recovery in the region. Countries such as Jamaica, Martinique, The Bahamas, Barbados, St. Lucia, and Dominica have seen a rise in cases due to the Delta variant and low local vaccination rates. “Things are gone back a bit quiet,” saidNahgie Laflouf, operations manager for adventure company Extreme Dominica. “They had started to pick up before the spike.” While countries such as the Cayman Islands have shut completely to visitors, others like Jamaica are still open to tourists with certain restrictions. “We have to double up our efforts to manage,” Jamaican Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett told Reuters. “The region is now on alert to deal with visitor hesitancy.”
