Africa’s Tourism Leaders Discuss Plans for Sustainable Recovery

The UNWTO Regional Commission for Africa (CAF), representing 23 African countries, joined for its 64th meeting on the island of Sal, Cape Verde, with as many as 21 ministers of tourism and five ambassadors. One of the key issues addressed was the restart of travel, as well as the implementation of a faster vaccine rollout and marketing the continent as a safe destination for travel. UNWTO members were briefed on the development of the “International Code for the Protection of Tourists,” which aims to rebuild trust in travel. In addition, the Declaration on the Future of Mobility and Sustainable Transportation was also signed at the event. The Declaration is a commitment to making Africa’s travel sector greener while encouraging greater cooperation between tourism authorities and suppliers.
