The town of Percé, QC, is set to introduce a tourist tax, citing the cost to maintain its tourism offerings and infrastructure while it also seeks to develop new attractions. Instead of increasing tax on its residents, the town is looking to pass the cost on to the half a million tourists who visit the town every year. Percé, located on the eastern edge of the Gaspé Peninsula, is a popular spot for whale watching, swimming, going to the boardwalk, and admiring the massive pierced rock sitting in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. A $1 fee is set to be added to meals, accommodations, activities, and souvenirs over $10 starting in MAY 2022. Town manager Jean-François Kacou hopes the new tourist fees will bring in an additional $1.5m in revenue every year. "Basically we're charging visitors because we have a tremendous amount of infrastructure...maintenance costs and operation expenses,” he said.
