Snowbirds Eye Return to Florida Even as Sunshine State Battles COVID-19

An increasing number of snowbirds are eyeing trips to Florida this winter despite the state battling large numbers of COVID-19 cases. While many might be Florida-bound this winter, the Canadian government doesn't endorse the idea. Global Affairs Canada said again on 24SEP that it recommends Canadians avoid "all non-essential travel" outside the country, a stance that the Canadian government has held since the beginning of the pandemic. Yet, just like last year, the situation won't hold some snowbirds back. "They're not going to spend another winter in Canada," said Wallace Weylie, legal counsel for the Canadian Snowbird Association. Both Air Canada and WestJet are also seeing indications that Canadians are looking for some sun this winter. In an email, Air Canada spokesperson Peter Fitzpatrick said there's "strong demand" for leisure travel to U.S. destinations — including to California, Florida and Hawaii — "with many of these markets on pace with 2019 levels." According to Morgan Bell, WestJet’s manager of media and public relations, the airline is also seeing demand for sun travel, but "demand remains inconsistent and challenging to predict" due to "fragmented" travel rules.
