Columbian airline Avianca has announced that it will begin flying its new non-stop Toronto - Bogotá (BOG) route in DEC 2021, with initial service three-times weekly in both directions. Flights will be operated on the airline's Airbus A320 aircraft with capacity for 150 passengers.

“Connecting Canada with Colombia is a strategic point for Avianca's proposal to have more direct flights and have the most robust network in the region," commented Rolando Damas, General Director of Avianca for Mexico, North America, the Caribbean and Asia.

"We are excited about this new route, and we know that with the product and service that we offer, the Canadian passenger will choose us for their flights to Colombia and other destinations in South America with which we offer important connectivity from the Bogota hub."

The details of the new route can be found below:

Route Flight  Departure Arrival Frequency
YYZ - BOG AV205 22:50* 05:00* Tues, Fri and Sat
BOG - YYZ AV204 15:20* 21:30*

*local time

Avianca does note that the route is still subject to government approval.

It also joins the launch of 23 new international routes for Avianca coming over the new couple of months into 2022.

As noted by Simple Flying, only two Canadian airways have connected Canada and Columbia directly: Air Canada and Air Transat. Air Canada will offer 14 flights between YYZ and BOG in OCT 2021 with an available capacity of 6,927 seats. To return to its pre-pandemic service to Columbia, Air Canada must provide 46 per cent more flights and 51 per cent more seats. Air Transat has yet to reactivate its route to Columbia.

Tourism increased dramatically from Canada to Columbia over the past decade prior to the pandemic. Within seven years, and between 2016 and 2019, year-over-year growth ranged between 15 and 20 per cent, according to ProColombia, Columbia's federal tourism agency. Canada is in the top three growth markets for Colombia.

Avianca is part of Star Alliance, which includes airline members such as Air Canada, Lufthansa, United Airlines, and others.
