According to NBC, US officials are preparing for what they think could be the biggest surge in traffic at America’s southern border in decades if the COVID-19 land border restriction that has blocked most migrants for almost two years is lifted on 30SEP. Reportedly on a call with Department of Homeland Security officials, US Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas asked whether the department was prepared for a worst-case scenario in which 350,000 to 400,000 migrants cross the border in OCT, which would be nearly double the record reached in JUL 2021 when more than 210,000 migrants crossed crossed over. The COVID-19 border restriction, known as Title 42, may be removed as early as the end of this week. U.S. District Judge Emmet Sullivan ruled that the Biden administration does not have the authority to use Title 42 to block asylum-seekers from crossing the U.S.-Mexico border. Recently, more than 25,000 Haitian migrants arrived in Del Rio, Texas, in a single week. Title 42 does not have any impact on the U.S. border with Canada.
