German Christmas Markets Face Possible 2nd Year of Closures as COVID Rates Soar

Soaring numbers of COVID-19 cases are threatening Germany’s famous Christmas markets, which may face a second year of closures despite being set to open very soon. On 10NOV, Germany registered a record number of COVID-19 cases for the third day in a row, with just under 40,000 new cases. Christmas markets were originally set to open with enhanced restrictions, such as proof of vaccination requirements, visitor number restrictions, and more. However, now authorities have begun announcing the cancellation of many scheduled markets, saying a rising infection rate means it would be irresponsible for them to go ahead. This may impact Christmas market tours and river cruises for Canadian advisors who have clients booked to visit European Christmas markets.
