Barbados has stopped pledging allegiance to Queen Elizabeth II on 30NOV as it becomes a republic for the first time in history. Several worldwide leaders, dignitaries, and artists, including Prince Charles and Barbados-born artist Rihanna, were in attendance for a ceremony that began late 29NOV. Fireworks peppered the sky at midnight as Barbados officially became a republic. According to CTV News, Barbados did not need permission from the U.K. to become a republic, although the island will remain a member of the Commonwealth Realm.
