Meliá Set to Open a New Major Theme Park in Punta Cana

Phase 1 of Katmandu Park

Meliá Hotels International is set to open a new major theme park destination in Punta Cana, called Katmandu, in fall 2022. The "world-class theme park" is being constructed in partnership with Falcon’s Beyond Global, an entertainment development company, which brings entertainment technology to theme parks, resorts, attractions, and more.

According to Caribbean Journal, the first phase of the theme park will include Katmandu Park Punta Cana, which features attractions such as rides, a "suspended theater" and more. This phase will take Katmandu characters and stories, popular in Europe, to a new audience in the Caribbean.

The second phase will add a "premier entertainment, dining and retail destination," led by Falcon's Beyond.

"This major joint venture between Meliá Hotels International and Falcon's Beyond in Punta Cana, an exceptional destination where we've been working for over 30 years, will become the first world-class theme park and entertainment destination in the Caribbean," said Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Meliá, Gabriel Escarrer.

In addition, Melia will be renovating two of its Paradisus properties in Punta Cana, including a Paradisus Palma Real as well as a rebuild of its first resort in the destination, Paradisus Punta Cana. The company expects the renovations of existing hotels to be "substantially completed" at the end of 2023. The new Paradisus Punta Cana is set to be more environmentally friendly, with energy efficiency and water and waste management as top priorities for the rebuild, along with a circular economy and neutral emissions.

"350 million dollars will be invested by Meliá together with Falcon's Beyond Global, an investment that will impact the region and the country," said Luis Abinader, the Dominican Republic President. "This is the objective of this Government, investments and employment opportunities in the Dominican Republic."
