Those looking for travel information may stop at the federal government’s travel advisory website, which is intended to help Canadians make informed decisions when it comes to travelling abroad safely. The site includes a destination-specific list of advisories for the COVID-19 safety level of each country, with countries like Cuba, Aruba and Barbados at the lowest possible advisory level, meaning there are “no significant safety and security concerns.” However, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) maintains a list that ranks countries by their COVID-19 risk, which classifies Cuba and Aruba as having “high” levels of COVID-19, and Barbados as “very high.” The difference between the two lists is that Canada’s advisory system is largely based on security concerns with travelling to a country such as civil unrest, terrorism, kidnappings, instead of by COVID-19 impact. When asked why Canada doesn’t have a list similar to the CDC’s, Transport Minister Omar Alghabra said it was “hard to keep a list that changes all the time.”
