Key West Locals Protest the Return of Cruise Ships

Cruise ships have begun returning to Key West, Florida, and some locals are not happy. Around 200 people gathered on 09DEC at the Mallory Pier to protest the arrival of the Norwegian Dawn to protest the arrival of large ships. Gatherers supported a group called “Safer Cleaner Ships,” which says it supports responsible cruise tourism that would require smaller ship dockings at Key West. Around 1 year ago, Key West voters put limits to reduce large cruise ship dockings to the town, but Florida state lawmakers overruled voters. “We are not done fighting this,” said Arlo Haskell, one of the group’s organizers, addressing the crowd with a microphone and speaker. “We are far from done.”
