Just as global air traffic appeared to be coming close to pre-pandemic levels, the Omicron variant is stalling the industry’s recovery. According to data from FlightRadar24, commercial flights were back within 15 per cent of comparable 2019 levels in the first days of DEC 2021. That was before countries around the world responded to the emergence of the new variant by imposing more restrictions on travellers, which set flight numbers back to more than 18 per cent below those in the same period in 2019.
