The Netherlands has imposed a nationwide lockdown as the country looks to stem a new wave of COVID-19 cases due to the Omicron variant. All non-essential stores, bars and restaurants will be closed until 14JAN 2022, said Prime Minister Mark Rutte. Schools and universities will shut until 09JAN. In addition, holiday celebrations will also be limited. Netherlands residents will only be permitted two visitors except for on Christmas and New Year's, when four will be allowed. The move is "unavoidable because of the fifth wave caused by the Omicron variant that is bearing down on us,” Rutte clarified.
