DEEP SLEEP

The Underground Hotel That's Selling Out Rooms With No Views

You won't need blackout drapes to prevent the morning sun from waking you up in this hotel.

Located a whopping 1,375 feet below the surface, this former Victorian-era slate mine in North Wales is now home to the aptly-named Deep Sleep hotel.

Just how deep? Imagine stacking the height of London's Shard on top of Big Ben's tower, and you still wouldn't reach the surface from this underground hotel.

Getting there is an adventure in itself. Starting from the town of Blaenau Ffestiniog, adventurous guests embark on a 45-minute hike through the Snowdonia region. Equipped with helmets, lights, and harnesses, they then descend into the mine with the help of experienced guides who will share stories about the mine's history and point out interesting sights along the way.

Once inside the Deep Sleep site, there's a choice between cozy underground cabins with two single beds or the grotto room, which is carved right into the slate walls. The accommodations may be underground, but they are far from roughing it. There's battery-powered lighting, a dry toilet, running water, and even Wi-Fi down there, although you can forget about cell reception.

The temperature in the deepest chamber hovers around 10 degrees Celsius , so warm winter PJs are a must. All cozy in bed, there's something primal about returning to the deep earth's embrace. No sirens outside to wake you during the night either!

Guests aren't left alone in the deep earth. Guides spend the night there too. Safety is taken seriously, with regular inspections conducted by independent mine engineers.

Talk about a 'dream' getaway.

But it's for real. Deep Sleep offers this experience on weekends and a cabin for two guests costs £350 (CAD$585), while the grotto room goes for £550 (CAD$925).

But don't fret; these rates include accommodations for two, an expedition-style dinner, and a light breakfast to fuel your underground explorations.

Sweet underground dreams!
