Believe it or not! Transport Minister scandalizes long after ministry ends! Yes, Pumpkins, ex-Transport Minister Cannon or, as we affectionately referred to him, old baldy is back in the news. The man is a full wattage beacon for outrage.
In a nutshell, when the first whiff of a pax rights bill wafted through the halls on the hill, his office warned AC, WS and TS to lobby against it tout-de-suite. Cannon’s office and Transport Canada both felt that "in an industry known for regularly overbooking passengers, cancelling undersold flights and making refunds difficult" some kind of legislated protection against such things would, like, be a total drag for the airlines. Now, granted, the bill presents some truly cockamamie ideas, but -- are these guys supposed to take sides like that? I really do find politics very confusing. I used to think they’re supposed to take the side of the folks who elected them.
But when the bill comes before Parliament, Cannon, being no political fool, shoots his ball into the other camp and votes in favour of it. After all, a minister does want to appear sympathetic to his constituents. Political hypocrisy knows no bounds.Â
