Starting in early APR 2022, Pearson Airport is temporarily closing its second-busiest runway for a “full rehabilitation,” one of the largest runway repair projects in the airport’s history.
Restoration work on the east/west runway 06L/24R will be done in phases, and is expected to last until late Fall 2022. As winds typically come from the west, this runway is frequently used as it supports arrivals from the east and departures to the west.

First built in the 1960s, YYZ says the 3-km runway needs to be fully repaired due to the wearing down of its concrete sub-structure because of weather conditions, use and time. This project is intended to extend the life of the runway by 30 years and enhance its safety.
“It is important to remember, there is no permanent airspace change associated with this project and any impacts are temporary and only for the duration of the project,” YYZ said.
During the work period, YYZ will have “reduced airline slots” and adjusted schedules to mitigate operational and community impacts.
In addition, the project will include the use of recycled materials and upgrades to 1,800 LED lights, which will help enhance safety and reduce the carbon footprint of the runway. Other environmentally friendly construction practices include using crushed concrete from the runway pavement removal for the sub-base and base materials, and recycled milling asphalt materials to build approach roads in the vicinity of the runway.
The announcement of the project comes just as the pandemic travel slowdown reverses and the summer season begins. Summer air traffic at YYZ is predicted to be busy in 2022. In MAR, approximately 85,000 passengers were expected to make their way through YYZ for travel that included March Break vacations, and airport officials warned of extra delays and longer wait times due to high volumes.
