YYZ to Reduce Flight Times, Curb Noise with New Landing Procedures

Person Internation Airport is adding new aircraft arrival procedures, which reports say will make flights faster and reduce greenhouse gas emissions and noise caused by descending planes.

According to Nav Canada, the company which runs the country's air navigation system, the new procedures will help planes shorten their trips, reduce fuel burn, and make descent operations quieter. To do so, the Globe and Mail reports Pearson is using satellite-based positioning and modern aircraft flight management systems to allow planes to arrive at the same time on parallel runways.

By allowing planes to arrive at the same time, Curiocity suggests more flights can be run and operations will be faster.

Due to the new system, planes arriving at YYZ from the south are able to fly 1,000 feet higher than before, which Nav Canada says will reduce noise over communities located to the south and downwind of the airport.

As the new arrival procedures will allow for shorter flights, Pearson is estimated to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 178 million kilograms.

Nav Canada added that an Air Canada flight flying from LHR to YYZ was one of the first flights to use the new procedures on 28NOV.

YYZ is also the second airport in the country to use these new procedures after YYC implemented them in 2019.
