Sunwing Says Pax Delayed Abroad During Holidays Should All Be Home by 02JAN

On 30DEC 2022, Sunwing posted an update regarding delayed flights after "severe weather" impacted the company's operations over the holidays, which left thousands of customers unable to return home at the end of their vacations.

In Sunwing's 30DEC update, the operator says its teams are working through backlogged flights to return customers in destination, anticipating that "most if not all" delayed customers should return home by 02JAN. Sunwing said it had planned 43 recovery flights for departure up to and including 02JAN 2023, 34 of which were completed by 30DEC, the date of its latest update.

"We know this past week has been frustrating for many of our customers as we continue to navigate unprecedented operational challenges, resulting in a number of ongoing flight delays. We deeply apologize for the impact to our customers’ travel plans over the holiday season, and in particular for our customers delayed in destination seeking an update on their rescheduled return flights," said Len Corrado, President of Sunwing Airlines on 28DEC.

According to previous updates from Sunwing, "a number" of northbound and southbound flights were impacted by delays due to "displaced crew and aircraft resulting from the aftermath of severe weather disruptions across Canada."

Customers with scheduled travel from Canadian airports up to and including 02JAN 2023 who would prefer to travel at a later date, were provided the ability to make a one time change to their travel date at applicable system rates, by contacting their travel agent or the Sunwing Sales Centre. Customers with flight delays of 24 hours or more and scheduled travel from Canada up to and including 02JAN 2023, also had the option to cancel their flight and receive a full refund to the original form of payment, should they prefer.

Sunwing notes that impacted passengers may submit a claim for compensation or a refund through the operator's web site for assessment. Receipts for related expenses can be sent to Sunwing Cares for review.
