Sunwing Confirms its Operations Have Resumed in Mazatlan

Sunwing announced on 09JAN that it completed recovery flights on the weekend to repatriate customers in Mazatlan.

As Open Jaw reported, the Mazatlan airport re-opened Friday 06JAN after being closed due to conflict between Mexican security forces and drug cartel supporters. The government of Canada issued a travel advisory urging Canadians on scene to shelter in place and for Canadians to avoid all travel to the Sinaloa region of the country, where three airports stopped operations.

As a result, southbound flights to Mazatlán were suspended by Sunwing and other airlines.

Sunwing says in its announcement that: "our teams have worked tirelessly to repatriate northbound passengers in the region who experienced delays as a result, including proactively scheduling recovery flights while providing hotel rooms, food and beverages and airport transfers to those in destination, at Sunwing’s cost."

We can confirm that Mazatlán airport reopened on Friday, the situation has stabilized locally and all recovery flights were completed this weekend as planned. Our regular operations have since resumed and we look forward to bringing our customers back to Mazatlán."
