Air Canada has issued a statement to clarify how it's handling the strike by independent catering workers from Gate Gourmet, who supply meals for flights out of YYZ.
Here’s their statement:
“One of Air Canada’s catering providers, Gate Gourmet, is experiencing a labour disruption at Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ)."
"This labour disruption means we may not be able to offer our typical food and beverage selection on your upcoming flight."
Here’s what you need to know:
Flights within North America:
Signature Class, Business Class, and Premium Economy Class: Beverage service will continue and snacks or a light meal will be provided. Hot meals, special meals, and meal pre-order service will be suspended. Passengers with dietary restrictions are advised to plan ahead, as the offering may not meet all needs.
Economy Class: Water service and a packaged snack, such as pretzels or a cookie, will be provided. Air Canada Bistro service will not be offered.
"We know that food and beverage service is an important part of your in-flight experience, and we’re very sorry for any inconvenience this external labour disruption may cause.”
Open Jaw's Jim Byers flew Air Canada from YYZ to YVR on 17APR. A few minutes before boarding, the gate agent announced that, due to the Gate Gourmet strike, there might only be water to drink on the plane. She advised pax to look for food or drinks before boarding.
Once on board, the flight crew said they had just flown in from YVR, which isn’t affected by the Gate Gourmet strike, and that they had some food and drinks available, including fruit and cheese trays, wine, coffee and other items.
WestJet said some routes to and from YYZ, specifically flights on Boeing 737 planes, may have “inconsistent food or beverage.” But it said it has provisional plans in place to make the trip more enjoyable for customers.
“To limit potential disruption, WestJet has proactively prepared contingency plans to ensure critical supplies are available onboard. Guests who are eligible to receive an inflight meal including those in the Premium cabin or Extended Comfort seating, and all guests travelling on transatlantic flights will receive either an alternative option or a food and beverage voucher for use in the terminal, pre-departure. In addition, WestJet is advising guests travelling to or from Toronto to plan ahead and bring an extra snack and/or beverage for their journey.”
