Maite Medina, Regional Sales Director, Barcelo Hotels in the Dominicublian Repc

How many hotels are you responsible for? We have 11 hotels in the D.R. – in all just over 5,000 rooms.

A few years ago, Canadians weren’t even aware of Spanish hotel chains and now there are so many – why the “Spanish invasion”? Spaniards really specialize in developing massive all-inclusive resort projects –the North American brands specialize in smaller, urban properties.

How is Barcelo different from the other Spanish chains? I really think the Barcelo family are visionaries, to be the first such as they were here in Punta Cana.  And I also believe our evening entertainment is superior to the other chains.

What’s the best part of your job?  Seeing people have a good time at my hotels.

What was your first job?  A reception clerk at the Sheraton in Santo Domingo.

What’s your dream vacation destination?  Japan – the culture, food, such a rich country in all aspects.

If you could sit next to anyone on a long haul flight who would it be?  Fidel Castro.

What drives you crazy?  People who don’t work hard.

What’s your worst habit?  (laughs) I shout when I’m stressed – but never at home!

If you could have any job in the industry, what would be be?  In charge of quality control for all our properties.

Whom do you admire in the industry?  I’d have to say Rick McCauley (Barcelo’s sales director in Canada). There is nothing he doesn’t know about the business.

What was the best piece of advice you ever received?  “Never give up!”
