Biting Questions with Julie Ruston, Adventure Travel Specialist, Adventure Center

Where were you born? In Stratford, Ont.

What was your first job? I was a dishwasher at Qualicum Beach Inn on Vancouver Island.

How long have you been in the business? About 8 years.

How has the business changed since you got into it? A lot of clients that I used to consider “old” are booking so much travel! I didn’t’ realize that 70 year olds travel so much. Also activity-based travel has become so much more popular – clients are taking holidays that combine multiple activities and sports.

Do you have a specialty? Africa, where most of my experience is.

If you could have any job in the business what would it be? Any job? President or CEO of a Vegvoyages – a tour operator for vegetarians.

What was your best FAM? Camping throughout Southern Africa. It really opened my eyes to travel in Africa.

What’s the weirdest question you’ve ever been asked? “The luggage allowance is 2 bags but I have only 1. What do I do?”

What drives you crazy? Clients who feel they know more than the agent.

What was your biggest individual sale? $76,000 for a private jet tour for 2 throughout the Southern Hemisphere.

Do you have any time management strategies? Yes, I try to read through my emails at the beginning of the day to see what has to be done. And I try to spend more than half of my day selling.

How do you cope with jetlag? Gravol!

What do you do to keep you clients loyal? The sale doesn’t end when I get the money. Some of our bookings have very long lead times so I send them quick notes all along so they don’t think I’ve forgotten them.

If you weren’t doing this, what would you be doing? I’d be a professional vegetarian cook.

If you or someone you know, who is a front line travel agent in Canada would like to be featured in Up Front, please email martha@gk.openjaw.xyz.
