Quark Expeditions has confirmed media reports that two guests have perished in an incident on a voyage in Antarctica.
"We are deeply saddened to confirm that there has been a tragic accident during a zodiac excursion from the ship World Explorer," Quark Expeditions said in a statement published on 21NOV in Cruise Week.
"A Zodiac boat carrying six passengers and two expedition staff overturned near shore, tragically resulting in two fatalities."
"The weather conditions were light winds and smooth sea state, and indications are the accident was caused by a breaking wave. The other four passengers and two staff are recovering under the care and observation of our doctors and medical staff on board," the statement continued.
The fatal mishap occurred on 15NOV near Cape Lookout, Elephant Island on Quark's first new build ship, World Explorer. Launched in 2019, it is an ice-class vessel that has capacity for up to 172 guests.
The company says that World Explorer returned to Ushuaia on 18NOV.
Quark Expeditions is not releasing the names or nationalities of the deceased or injured, for privacy reasons. It has stated it has been in contact with the embassy of the deceased in Argentina.
In addition, the company said, "We are in close contact with the next of kin and our priority right now is supporting them, our passengers and crew while we investigate further,' Quark said.
'We will continue to work with, and offer our assistance to, those involved during this difficult time, including full cooperation with the relevant authorities.'
