Celebrity Cruises Outlines Latest Sustainability Efforts Ahead of Earth Day 2023

Celebrity Cruises' Edge Series includes new sustainability features

To celebrate Earth Day on 22APR, Celebrity Cruises has released its latest steps towards achieving Destination Net Zero, its plan for net-zero emissions by 2050.

Fleet-wide, the cruise line implements environmental initiatives, including going plastic straw-free, and the company partners with WWF and Save The Waves on global environmental projects. More information can be found here.

Its newest, Edge-series of ships have each added new features supporting sustainability, and its newest, upcoming ship, the Celebrity Beyond, introduces even more.

Celebrity Beyond
  1. Celebrity Beyond's Tri-Fuel Engine

Celebrity Cruises is introducing a new flex fuel engine for the next ship in its Edge Series, Celebrity Beyond, which is launching later this year. The new ship will be equipped with a new tri-fuel engine model, along with storage and delivery systems, that will give unmatched fuel flexibility, with the ability to use three types of fuel, including methanol.

  1. Innovative Ship Design

Celebrity Beyond is equipped with several features that reduce fuel consumption by another 20 per cent compared to the previous generation of ships, including:

  • The re-designed ship’s bow (a parabolic ultra-bow) creates increased fuel efficiency, greater speed and a smoother ride for guests;
  • An emissions purification system onboard removes close to 100 per cent of emissions;
  • Shore power capabilities reduce its in-port emissions to near zero when at a port with connectivity; and
  • The hull is coated with millions of tiny bubbles to reduce the drag and improve fuel efficiency.
  1. The First Ship Designed Specifically for the Galapagos
Celebrity Flora

Celebrity Cruises' recent new build, Celebrity Flora, was designed with the latest environmental technologies, in addition to being designed specifically for the Galapagos - the first of its kind. Its dynamic positioning system allows the ship to remain in one position without dropping anchors, protecting the seabed. And its solar panels supplement electricity, reducing emissions.  More information on the Celebrity Flora can be found here.
