
After announcing a delay in the delivery of its newest vessel, EXPLORA I, Explora Journeys is gearing up for its inaugural voyage.
The luxury cruise ship was originally scheduled to set sail on 17JUL, 2023 from Southampton, UK, as Open Jaw reported, but due to unmet fire safety requirements, the delivery from the shipyard was postponed by several weeks.
Now, Explora Journeys has confirmed EXPLORA I's first sailing will commence on 01AUG, 2023 from Copenhagen, Denmark.
The Cruise Division of MSC Group has always had a strong focus on limiting cruising’s impact on the oceans and has committed to achieving net zero emissions for by 2050. In order to achieve that goal, Explora Journeys' fleet, which includes the new EXPLORA I, will be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG).
The environmental features of EXPLORA I and EXPLORA II include a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) System that reduces nitrogen oxide emissions by 90 per cent. The vessels have advanced wastewater treatment systems, ballast water treatment systems, shore-to-ship power connectivity, updated recycling and solid waste management, as well as RINA Dolphin certified underwater noise reduction to minimize acoustic sound impact on marine fauna.
On board, Explora Journeys is eliminating single-use plastics, utilizing bio-degradable coffee pods, sourcing local food, minimizing food waste, reducing linen change frequency, using eco-refill amenities, reducing packaging, providing refillable water bottles, partnering with B Corp certified suppliers, employing wet cleaning methods, and using natural sanitation detergents.
EXPLORA I will also features an Orca Machine for composting organic waste, reducing landfill usage.
"By implementing these measures, EXPLORA I strives to provide a more sustainable and environmentally conscious cruising experience," said a spokesperson for the cruise line in a statement.
In APR, Explora Journeys announced that oceanographer, explorer, and conservationist Dr. Sylvia Earle, Founder and Chairman of Mission Blue, was to be the Godmother of its first ship, EXPLORA I, as Open Jaw reported.
