I will admit to being a novice to luxury cruising, but in the less than 24 hours I’ve been on board, Explora I has exceeded my expectations on any luxury scale.
For those who haven’t heard the news, Explora Journeys is the luxury travel brand of MSC Group. But that’s where the similarities end.
The ship’s palette is a muted taupe and white, elegantly appointed with unique understated artwork. The whole effect is one of taste and class.
By far the most impressive aspect, among many, are the invisible attendants who materialize within seconds of your expression taking on a lost look. “Can I help you?” “Where do you need to be?”
And it doesn’t stop there. Whether a manager or room service attendant, twice now, I have been escorted all the way to my destination by a charming individual more than happy to be of service. And I don’t mean just down the hall. Up the elevator, across the ship, all the way to my end destination until I was safely ensconced in whatever venue I had been aimlessly searching for - serious points for service above and beyond.
Last night, 12OCT, was party night. The ship was officially named at the Manhattan Cruise Terminal by Explora I’s Godmother, Dr. Sylvia Earle, a renowned marine biologist and oceanographer.

All of MSC Group’s glitterati were in attendance.

Pierfrancesco Vago, Executive Chairman, Cruise Division, MSC Group, said, “In the world of luxury travel, EXPLORA I is a game-changer. We are offering journeys that redefine the very essence of luxurious ocean travel. We are looking to attract a wider group of discerning travelers who have experienced the finest luxury land-based resorts but seek more value, more authenticity, and a deeper connection to the world. Explora Journeys is the answer by giving you a way to discover off the beaten track destinations by sea, all whilst enjoying some of the best real estate in the world. With a further five ships joining the fleet in the next five years, we are committed to delivering the same unique experience on board, wherever you are in the world.”

I’m lucky to have an entire week’s journey in which to indulge in all the ship’s offerings and explore each venue and restaurant - of which there are many tantalizing options.
Stay tuned…
