Messi Names World's Largest Ship, Icon of the Seas

During a spectacular ceremony within the AquaDome of the world's largest cruise ship, Lionel Messi, the most decorated fútbol player in history, officially named Icon of the Seas. The icon of Icon of the Seas, and TIME's 2023 Athlete of the Year, Messi, did the honours during a star-studded event in Miami on 23JAN.

The audience was captivated as aerialists emerged from the pool, soaring around the dome, while daring high-divers plunged from platforms. A live performance by Scotland's Red Hot Chili Pipers had the crowd clapping and moving to the beat.

Royal Caribbean Group President/CEO Jason Liberty described Icon as a 'revolutionary product that pushes the limits of human ingenuity,' representing over 50 years of innovation.

Royal Caribbean International and Inter Miami CF announced they had joined forces in a multiyear partnership in August.

"Royal Caribbean started in Miami more than 50 years ago, and we have always had heart and passion for our community," said Liberty.

"It's been exciting to see Inter Miami's success, including their recent Leagues Cup title, energize South Florida. As the Club's Main Partner, we are thrilled to build on that momentum together and deliver memorable moments to fans around the world."

During the 23JAN ceremony, Messi officially named and bestowed safekeeping onto the ship, its dedicated crew and the adventurers who will experience it for years to come.

As Open Jaw reported, the highly anticipated Icon of the Seas took centre stage when it arrived in Miami for the first time on 10JAN.

Open Jaw was invited for a sneak peek of its thrills and next-level chills, where Lisa Connell, Director of Sales, Canada - Royal Caribbean International, dished on what makes the ship unique and why it engenders so much loyalty among the trade.

Making its debut on Saturday, 27JAN, Icon will unveil six record-setting waterslides, seven pools, the inaugural neighbourhood crafted for young families, and over 40 dining, drinking, and entertainment options, as highlighted in a press release by the cruise line.
