Barceló Sues Sunwing for a Pre-Covid Debt of USD 2 Million

Reports say Barceló Hotel Group has filed a lawsuit against Canadian tour operator Sunwing Travel Group for a default of USD 2 million (1.7 million euros) including interest and costs.

Spanish-language Hosteltur published a report Wednesday that a lawsuit has been filed in Ontario court for a debt allegedly incurred in the winter season prior to the COVID travel lockdown.

It reportedly relates to Barceló's hotels in the Caribbean.

The report notes Sunwing has received financial support from the Canadian government, pointing to the JUN agreement that the Canada Enterprise Emergency Funding Corp. (CEEFC) would provide Sunwing with a USD 100 million refundable loan under the country's Large Employer Emergency Financing Facility (LEEFF) to enable the operator to provide refunds for COVID cancellations.

In addition, it also notes another LEEEF loan of USD $348 million dollars provided Sunwing with the liquidity to maintain jobs and continue operating during the recovery period.

The report did not include comments from either Barceló or Sunwing.
