Ruben Jimenez & Karen Puebla of the Cuba Tourist Board with
Jorge F. Soberón Luis, consul general of Cuba in Toronto
Whats not to love? The weather is warm, the beaches are beautiful and the people are friendly and proud of their country.
Recently travel agents were invited to Lula Lounge, Toronto’s premiere Latin music venue, to learn about what Cuba has to offer. Dinner was served and a Cuban band performed some traditional tunes giving a true glimpse of island culture.
According to Ruben Jimenez, Director of the Cuba Tourist Board, the number of tourists to Cuba so far this year, has already reached one million. Half of this million are Canadians, and the tourist board recognizes and appreciates that travel agents are a big part of this success. 2010 saw a similar number of tourists, however, Jimenez spoke words of encouragement for agents to continue to work hard to make 2011 an even better year.
This doesn't seem too difficult a task as Cuba boasts an embarrassment of riches. Sun and sand are a given, but let's not overlook the colonial style architecture which is unique to the Caribbean; natural wonders and beautiful landscapes; sporting events and a vibrant music and cultural scene. There are several world heritage sites to explore, and the The Cuban National ballet is recognized as one of the world's leading ballet companies.
Karen Puebla, Executive Assistant to the Cuba Tourist Board, focused her presentation on Santiago de Cuba, situated in the south eastern area of the island and easily accessible from all other areas of the country. It is the second largest city in Cuba and offers its own healthy dose of history and excitement. Many festivals are celebrated here, and, "if you love music, go to Santiago de Cuba", says Puebla. For underwater enthusiasts, the diving conditions are world famous.
With the Canadian dollar at a high and such easy access to Canada (just 3 1/2 hours from Toronto), a trip to Cuba is good value for money. It is also a very safe destination and has excellent health services, which is undoubtedly an important consideration for many travellers.
