Peru recently descended on Toronto with great fanfare – bringing fashion, logo design, culinary treats and local drinks to business men and potential tourists.
The country’s flair for design was visible not only in the fabric and textures used by trendy Peruvian designer Sergio Davila, but also in the newly minted country brand. A chat with PromPeru’s Director of Country Image Promotion Isabella Falco reveals that the logo’s spiral design, created by the Buenos Aires office of logo design firm Futurebrand, is a marriage of past and present – a recurring theme in all the presentations. The stylized image of the word Peru with a spiral letter P evokes a “universal icon,” as well making references to Peruvian archaeological sites such as Caral and Moray. By design, the swirly “P” also depicts the much more modern computer symbol @.
Ms. Falco reflected on the country’s mixture of cultures melded over 500 years to create a unique perspective. Canadian tourism has increased to about 50,000 visitors a year who travel with niche operators. The Director also stressed the country’s ambition is not to go mass, but rather to expose more Canadians to the promises held in the unique mix of modern sensibilities and ancient attractions.
During Sergio Davila’s fashion expose, we were treated to vibrant Latin American cuisine including ceviche, spicy creole aji de gallina and refreshing Pisco Sours. Note: Caution should be exercised when consuming the aforementioned dishes!
