A cache of Grenadian goodies

My office smells of nutmeg.  And that’s a good thing.

After an endless cold and dreary winter, an evening with Grenadian hosts was a ray of sunshine.

The three-island nation, comprising Grenada, Carriacou and Petit Martinique (‘carry-a-koo’ and ‘peety martinique’) has long been just under the radar with Canadians. But now with improved lift more Canucks will discover the quiet, authentic and fragrant charms of Grenada.

Somewhat smaller than Barbados, Grenada punches way above its weight when it comes to tourism experiences – particularly those with a nature angle. Nutmeg and spice plantations scent the air. Pristine beaches, sulphur springs and waterfalls, rainforest hikes and diving visits to the wreck of the Bianca Care all part of the appeal.

Add a reputation for friendly safety and community-oriented culture – it’s a joy to experience the island as you bounce along in a mini-van bus full of school kids, office workers and local ladies just back from the market – and you’ve got gold.

“We’ve even got a free dolphin excursion,” Sekou Stroude, Director of Sales for Canada of the Grenada Tourism Authority told us. “It’s called the ferry over to Carriacou!” With just 5,000 residents, Carriacou makes for a pleasant day trip to experience its white sandy beaches and small town vibe.

There’s lots of news on the hotel front in Grenada: Silversands Hotel will be opening in November of this year.  A Leading Hotel of the World aimed at “the St. Barts and Barbados client,” the five-star property will feature just 44 rooms and villas and a jaw-dropping 100-meter pool.

Kimpton is also on the books, slated to open early next year with a stunning infinity pool overlooking renowned Grand Anse Beach. Calabash is joining the prestigious Relais and Chateaux group, while the Green Roof Inn on Carriacou is a welcome retreat for the client interested in sustainability and wellness.

And, of course, there is the Rex, a perennial favourite with Canadians representing excellent value in a great location, Sal Buccellato of Rex Resorts Canada told me.

Air Canada now offers daily service YYZ-GND on Mondays with discussion ongoing for a second flight. Caribbean Airlines also has daily service from YYZ via POS.

Just don’t forget to tell your clients to pause and smell the nutmeg.
