A new survey by Sunwing revealed that 58 per cent of Canadians are eager for a return to travel in the next 12 months.

The company resumes operations to select destinations starting tomorrow, 30JUL.

“We’re seeing some exciting new travel trends emerge as Canadians plan their highly anticipated vacations,” commented Samantha Taylor, chief marketing officer at Sunwing.

“Group getaways are becoming increasingly sought after, as family and friends plan to reunite at an all inclusive resort, while travelling with a significant other is another popular choice.”

She adds that Sunwing's survey of Canadians shows that, “There is heightened demand for frictionless vacation experiences – just book, travel and enjoy.”

Almost 40 per cent of respondents aged 18-34 indicated they would be travelling with friends on their next getaway. In addition, 38 per cent of all respondents who plan on travelling in the next 12 months indicated an interest in vacationing with family members, while 71 per cent expressed an intent to travel with their partner or significant other.

Additional insights include:

  • Residents of British Columbia are significantly more likely to be planning leisure travel this holiday season, with 71 per cent indicating they would be travelling this winter, followed by Saskatchewan and Alberta at 64 per cent and 61 per cent respectively.
  • 68 per cent of respondents from across the country who plan on travelling within the next year are interested in an all-inclusive vacation, with the most interest from residents of Saskatchewan, Manitoba (78 per cent) and Atlantic Canada (73 per cent).

Sunwing’s survey of Canadians echoes similar findings of other recent surveys that included Canadians as well as respondents from other countries.

As Open Jaw reported this week, Expedia’s Travel Index found that more than a third of travellers have a larger travel budget now compared to 2020, and also that price is no longer the primary driver in travel bookings.

Flight Centre Travel Group, one of the world’s largest travel retailers, also recently surveyed its customers. They found 254 per cent more respondents are “excited” about travel than in NOV 2020.

Sunwing’s Canadian survey was conducted by Angus Reid between 19-20JUL, 2021 with a nationally representative sample of 1,533 Canadians, in both English and French.
