Hurricane Ian Wreaking Travel Havoc in Cuba, Florida and Up the U.S. East Coast

Hurricane Ian, Florida, CubaHurricane Ian is creating major travel disruptions along its path from Cuba, to Florida, where it has been projected to land as a category 4 hurricane on Wednesday afternoon and along the U.S. East Coast.

Airports and major tourist attractions are closing and cruising is being disrupted.

As of the morning of Wednesday, 28SEP:

CUBA

Cuba was impacted significantly by Hurricane Ian's passage on 27SEP as it went through the most western part of the island. Cuban tourism officials say that local damage didn’t affect any hotel infrastructure and properties are operating normally, thanks to having their own generators. HAV is expected to resume operations later on Wednesday.

AIRPORTS

More than 3,500 flights have been cancelled in the United States for Wednesday and Thursday, according to a Forbes report.

The following Florida airports are closed until further notice: EYW, PIE, TPA, SRQ, Orlando's MCO and MLB. MIA remains open, but some flights are delayed and cancelled due to the hurricane.

Airports along the east coast are experiencing delays and cancellations include ATL, CLT and the New York City-area trio of JFK, LGA and EWR.

ATTRACTIONS

Disney announced that it is shutting down its four theme parks and two water parks in Florida on Wednesday and Thursday 28 and 29SEP. It is also closing some hotel areas, including its Fort Wilderness campground, while others will remain open. As well, it has cancelled guests who were booked on the resort’s Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser.

Universal Orlando Resort, LEGOLAND Florida, SeaWorld Orlando, Aquatica Orlando, Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex and Busch Gardens Tampa Bay will also be closed 28SEP and 29SEP. Some have said that they hope to reopen on Friday, if possible.

CRUISING

Port Canaveral has ceased operation until further notice, resulting in the cancellation of the Norwegian Getaway's 29SEP departure. Some cruise lines are hoping for a Friday reopening from Port Canaveral.

According to Cruise Week, the Port of Tampa Bay and the Port of Jacksonville have been closed, and as a result Carnival Paradise's departure from Tampa on Thursday, 29SEP, has been cancelled, as has Carnival Elation's departure from Jacksonville.
