Ottawa Upgrades Travel Advisory for Brazil Following Violent Demonstrations

On 09JAN, the government of Canada updated its travel advisory for Brazil, advising Canadians to "exercise a high degree of caution" especially in Brasilia and Sao Paulo as violent clashes broke out on the weekend between political protesters and government security forces.

The latest Canadian travel advisory for Brazil reads as follows:

On January 8, 2023, clashes between protesters and security forces took place at the Congress, the Supremo Tribunal Federal and other federal government buildings in Brasilia. Demonstrations and roadblocks are likely across the country in the coming days and weeks, including in São Paulo. They could disrupt transportation in some areas.

Avoid the following areas of Brasilia:

  • Brazilian National Congress
  • Presidential Palace
  • Plaza of the Three Powers
  • Rodoviária Interestadual (interstate bus station)
  • other government buildings

If you are in Brazil:

  • avoid areas where demonstrations and large gatherings are taking place
  • don’t attempt to cross road blockades, even if they appear unattended
  • allow extra time to reach your destination
  • expect increased security forces
  • monitor local media for information on the evolving situation
  • follow the instructions of local authorities
