Canada’s Mobile Phone Companies Hiking Roaming Fees Ahead of March Break

Just before Canadians head off on March Break travels, they'll have a new expense to factor into their travel budgets: two out of three of Canada’s biggest telecom companies are raising rates on mobile use outside of Canada - a major source of revenues for mobile service providers, according to CBC.

As of 08MAR, Telus will increase U.S. roaming charges from $12 to $14/day and international roaming fees from $15 to $16/day. Customers of its discount brand Koodo will apparently see similar hikes.

Bell’s increases begin 09MAR, with U.S. roaming rates bumped up from $12 to $13/day, and international roaming going from $15 to $16/day. Bell-owned Virgin Mobile will increase its roaming rates, too.

No word yet if Rogers and its sister brands Chatr and Fido are raising roaming fees too.
