The Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) and Unifor, Canada's largest private sector union, have announced the successful negotiation of a collective bargaining agreement that will impact over a thousand airside, facilities, operations, professional and support, and skilled trades employees at Toronto Pearson International Airport.

The agreement is set to take effect from 01AUG, 2023, according to releases by both the GTAA and the union, and the four year term, to 31JUL, 2027, will help ensure that labour issues will not impede smooth airport operations.

Deborah Flint, President and CEO of the GTAA, stated, "This collective agreement is a step forward for our employees who have served with deep commitment during the past few years. It is a step forward into the future of Toronto Pearson as we transform the airport and generate a greater economic impact. The relationship ensures stability and shows the commitment from all GTAA employees to serving passengers and working with our airline and commercial partners - this summer, and in the years ahead."

Key highlights of the agreement include wage increases over the four-year period, as well as improvements in benefits and pension contributions. The agreement also aims to align compensation for skilled trade workers with industry standards and other unions.

The 1,400 members of a Unifor Local 2002 unit voted 80 per cent in favour of ratifying the contract.

Unifor National President Lana Payne said, "This agreement is groundbreaking in the aviation industry and sets a new standard for what we can accomplish moving forward. It is a testament to the committee, who has tirelessly represented the members' interests throughout the negotiation process."

The ratification meetings for the contract were held on 14JUN and 15JUN at the Sheraton Gateway Hotel in Toronto.
