A major wind storm and flooding have hit Scotland and other Northern European countries, and there are reports of cancelled rail service and strong weather warnings.
Associated Press reports at least one person was reported dead after being swept into a river in Scotland. Their report said gale-force winds are expected to hit hardest in the eastern part of Denmark’s Jutland peninsula and the Danish islands in the Baltic Sea.
But the northern part of the British Isles, southern Sweden and Norway, and northern Germany are also on the path of the storm, named Babet by the U.K.’s weather forecaster, the Met Office.
The Daily Mail reports that Scotland’s First Minister, Humza Yousaf, said travel should be 'avoided unless absolutely essential' after the Met Office warned of a “risk to life” from flooding.
The Daily Mail said that cross-country rail cancelled all train services between Exeter and Plymouth as Britain braces for an onslaught of heavy rain and 70-mph gales.
A check of flightaware.com reveals no major flight delays as of early morning Eastern Time on 20OCT, but ground transportation is considerably trickier given the rain and winds.
