2024 seems to be a new beginning for those who have yet to get back on an airplane. They are finally chasing the dream they though they'd never take. I'm lucky that most of my clients are close to retirement, which means they have a bit more disposable income and are ready to roll on their next adventures. In 2023 we saw a rise in interest for Portugal, Spain, Croatia, Italy & Japan.
In 2024 its longer cruises, smaller ships, and more intimate ports that seem to top the wish lists. Some interesting options have been introduced with G Adventures for more active land trips with higher end stays (Geluxe Collection) as well as Exoticca Independent and small group upgraded options, which are right up my client's alley. For me its all about planning small groups, small ships and getting immersed in culture.

My personal top travel pick for 2024 is Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei, a hidden gem among the many Indo-Pacific destinations that are now available through Air Canada’s new service from Vancouver to Singapore (or Bangkok, for that matter!) We believe that in 2024, Peru will continue to be a major draw for travellers. I can think of many reasons for this, starting with what we believe is an enduring desire to step out of the proverbial comfort zone, meet new people, and create lasting memories that turn every one of us into a storyteller. Peru, with its larger-than-life landscapes from mountain to sea, strong sense of tradition, and largely yet undiscovered gastronomy, is indeed a fantastic destination to come back changed from. Vacationing in places that are not so conventional is a great way to meet the need for a change of scenery and to live experiences that actually transform us!

Bilbao is a city my family and I fell in love with a few years ago, so it’s fitting my daughter’s wedding will take place there later this year. Since we are a large family, there is enough to do for everyone, including the amazing Guggenheim Museum, restaurants, shopping, entertainment, you name it. And the canals provide a hint of other amazing cities like Amsterdam. We’re all very excited at the prospect of being there together.

There are an infinite number of destinations I could list, but having just come back from Northern Spain this summer, it will need to be my winner for 2024. Getting away from the crowded Madrid and Barcelona and instead visiting Bilbao, Oviedo and the culinary powerhouse of San Sebastian. I think I had one of my best meals ever in a seaside tavern in San Sebastian, it quiet literally brought me to tears. Everything about this region is amazing, from its cathedrals, landscapes, beaches, museums and the food; oh, man, the food. Such a travel winner in my books!

Thailand continues its epic comeback, and we can expect it to boom even more as travellers head there before the ‘White Lotus Effect’ takes hold, with filming for the third season set to begin in 2024. Up 76% in traveller numbers year on year, Thailand is still a solid choice for young travellers and backpackers looking for an affordable escape.

I grew up in Arizona, and California was my favourite getaway from the summer heat. It has the perfect weather all year long. Porter started nonstop service from Toronto to Los Angeles (16JAN) and San Francisco (25JAN). I recommend taking a drive down the Pacific Coast Highway from the Bay Area to LA. It's the quintessential SoCal experience. Of course, there is no better way to make the long trip to California than in Porter's elevated all-economy experience. Free beer and wine, anyone?

Many eyes will be on France this year. Paris will host the Summer Olympic Games from July 23 to Aug. 10, hopefully without the stain of COVID. Tahiti, which is part of France, will host the surfing competition. This year also marks the 150th anniversary of the Impressionism movement, and there will be tons of exhibits around the country. This year also marks the 80th anniversary of D-Day. I love Paris, but I also recommend the Dordogne Valley for great food and hilltop castles. If you love the mountains, check out the tremendous hiking and walking trails around the majestic Cirque de Gavarnie, which butts up against Spain in the Pyrenees.
