Iconic landmarks and monuments across Ireland are illuminating red on Canada Day in recognition of the shared history, heritage and cultural connections between the two countries.

Locations that have shone a red light include Titanic Belfast, The Giant’s Causeway, Dublin Castle, Kylemore Abbey, Valentia Island, and the monuments at the Marconi Station in the Derrygimlagh Bog, among others.

The two countries share a unique history, such as Alcock & Brown making the first transatlantic flight from St. John’s, Newfoundland to Connemara, Co. Galway, the first transatlantic cable message sent from Valentia Island, Co Galway to Heart's Content, Newfoundland, and the first  wireless communications between Clifden, Co Galway and Glace Bay, Nova Scotia.

“It is heart-warming to see Ireland illuminate in recognition of the close connections between our two countries this Canada Day, spotlighting our rich heritage,” said Sandra Moffatt, Manager, Tourism Ireland, Canada.

“The links between Ireland and Canada run deep, with over 4.5 million Canadians claiming Irish ancestry. We are delighted that, although divided by an ocean, we remain bound by our past and united in our hope for the future. We look forward to when we can welcome Canadian visitors back to the island of Ireland and invite them to explore the connections between our two countries.”
