Mexico Bans Smoking in Hotels, Beaches and All Public Spaces

One of the strictest anti-tobacco laws in the world took effect in Mexico on 15JAN. Surprisingly, the ban has a direct affect on tourists as it includes traditional light up areas such as beaches and hotels, in addition to all other public spaces.

Similar restrictions will be implemented on e-cigarettes and vaping.

Smokers might also have a tough time finding cigarettes. The General Law for Tobacco Control reform states “The direct or indirect display of tobacco products at points of sale is prohibited."

World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Twitter: “Bravo Mexico!”

Not everyone in Mexico is happy about the reform, which forces people to smoke in their own homes. And, according to the BBC, enforcement will be challenging. There’s growing concern that with rampant police corruption in the country, officers tasked with issuing fines, “will use it as a pretext for taking bribes.”
